How scores are calculated: Scores combine three data sources: NHTSA complaints & recalls (40%), NCAP crash safety ratings (30%), and third-party reliability surveys (30%, when available). Complaint and recall rates are normalized per 1,000 units sold using EPA production data so high-volume brands are fairly compared to niche ones. Scores are relative within the evaluated set — the best performer scores ~95 and the worst ~10, spread across the full range each year. This means a brand's score reflects how it compares to peers, not an absolute standard. Brands with no data for a given year show — and are excluded from rankings.
